Your septic system consists of several working parts that effectively remove and dispose of wastewater from your home. One of these working parts is the drainfield. It’s essential to understand how the drainfield works in order to care for it effectively and prevent potential issues that may arise from misuse. Here’s how your septic drainfield works.
- A series of pipes: Your septic drainfield consists of a series of perforated pipes placed underground, usually in gravel-filled trenches.
- From the septic tank to the drainfield: When the wastewater exits your home, it flows into the septic tank, which filters the wastewater from the larger bits of waste. It then sends the remaining wastewater from the tank to the drainfield, where it will be properly and safely disposed of into the ground.
- Naturally filtered: Once the wastewater enters your drainfield, it exits through the perforations to be further filtered into the ground. Additional dirt and gravel are usually placed below the pipes to aid with filtration. This allows the wastewater to be naturally filtered through the rocks and dirt before returning to the groundwater system.
- Keeps your groundwater safe: Your septic drainfield effectively removes any bacteria or other unwanted materials from your wastewater to keep your groundwater safe and clean with minimal disruptions or safety concerns.
It’s just as important to take great care of your drainfield as it is to know how it works. If you notice any concerns that might indicate it’s not working properly, you will need to schedule an inspection and potentially a repair or replacement.
